Halt and Catch Fire: Bearing Down Like a Freight Train

Spoilers for the first two seasons of Halt and Catch Fire below.


What if the thing you had created became something else? Would you double down and try to force it to be what it no longer was? Or would you roll with it, and join in on making what it was now better?

Cameron (Mackenzie Davis) had started Mutiny as a community for people to come together. But it had been a community centered around games. With the rise of Community, it was now more than games. Perhaps the upcoming Extract and Defend would change things. But regardless Cameron was gonna have to face it that her company was just as much the application Donna (Kerry Bishé) had championed.

Of course, little did they know Joe (Lee Pace) was on his way to their office to give them an offer to buy them out. But that wasn't all. Gordon (Scoot McNairy) had something he needed to tell Donna.

After the sad, sorry affair in California, Gordon came home and finally told Donna about his illness. She was naturally shocked and offered to quit Mutiny to take care of him. Gordon emphatically told her not to do that. After all, he felt fine. And he was gonna go forward with his custom computer building business.

Donna had a lot of questions about that, but Gordon assured her it would be okay. After all, his office was just a couple dozen steps from the kitchen. And he'd have his guys, including Ed (Pete Burris) and Larry (Eric Goins) to help him. It was gonna be okay.

Of course, Gordon didn't tell Donna all of his secrets. It's possible she knew about his falling out with Henry. Haley and Joanie were there too, and it's unlikely they could keep the secret about all of it. But he certainly didn't tell her about what happened with Jules out by the lake.

But it wasn't like Donna was exactly forthcoming with her big secret either. Now, it's quite possible that she didn't tell him because it wasn't the right time. Much more likely, she'd tell him it was a miscarriage, if only to keep the story straight with what she told her mom.

Whatever secrets remained between them, Donna honored Gordon's request and didn't quit Mutiny. But she did ask Cameron for a couple days off to process Gordon's news and spend some time with him. This was a bad time for Clark family drama, however. Joe had returned, and he had offered Mutiny a deal to buy them.

Mutiny, under the caring guidance of Joe MacMillan and Westgroup, was gonna be great. The oil company would buy up the neighborhood and build a full campus for the team around them. They'd have full creative control over Community, and games would still have a home as well. All that needed to happen was for Cameron to say yes.

Joe made the sale to Donna by showing how important Community would be to his plans. And he tried to make the hard sell to Cameron by the promise he'd get out of the way and let her do her thing. And if that meant making games, that meant making games. They'd be the heart of Mutiny's innovation, a technical showcase for the company. He really did want to give them everything. And Donna and Bos (Toby Huss) were listening.

But Cameron refused. She took the deal to the programmers and asked if they were gonna go work downtown for an oil company. Were they excited to wear a shirt and tie, and punch a time clock every day? None of that was part of the agreement she brandished about without reading any details out loud. Her loyal troops responded to her show of defiance by loudly cheering "Mutiny" over and over again. Cameron, her mandate for refusal established by the masses, ripped the agreement to shreds. Mutiny would not be Westgroup's puppet.

But as Joe left in defeat, it was clear not everyone was on board with Cameron's refusal. Donna was receptive to the sale and was hurt by Cameron making a crack about Joe wanting to turn Mutiny into a place for housewives sharing recipes, a clear dig at Community. Also, Bos gave Joe a look that said they’d talk later.

But for now, Mutiny was still free, its future as a Westgroup subsidiary scattered in the front room of the Mutiny house.

"Open architecture, baby." - Gordon Clark, "Working for the Clampdown"

Gordon brought his guys, including Ed and Larry together to hear his pitch. There were people out there who wanted something more than what they could get off the shelf. And Gordon wanted to give it to them. By dealing directly with the customer, they could cut out the middleman and deliver a superior project for cheap. The target audience were people who read computer magazines and had plenty of expendable income and dreams, with neither the time nor the inclination to build their own machine. Gordon and the guys wouldn't be creators, trying to invent a better mousetrap or give a computer a soul. They would be builders, damn good ones. If only they would join him.

Larry asked why they should leave their good jobs at major companies to work for Gordon. Gordon offered to match their most recent paychecks. And he appealed to their sense of accomplishment they all felt building the Giant. He got them on board, at least while they were on vacation from their jobs. Right away, Gordon bought $40,000 ($124,000 today) worth of CPUs. Clark Computers was really gonna happen.

Donna was there at the beginning, working on her Mutiny concerns at the kitchen table, glad to be there for Gordon. But the $40,000 purchase before a single computer had been sold concerned her. Was this Gordon's illness? Was it just a risky business decision? Or was it just clear confidence in the work? Donna didn't know, and that was a problem. She asked Larry and Ed to keep an eye on Gordon.

Gordon didn't know that, though. What he did know was that nothing was gonna stand in Clark Computers way. The way forward was so clear to him, and all the energy in the world was at his command. No brain damage was gonna spoil this parade, no sir. It was the greatest idea in the history of computers, no, the world. And Gordon had it.

Gordon was gonna win.

"It ain't me, babe." - John "Bos" Bosworth, "Working for the Clampdown"

Joe was not gonna give up on trying to make Mutiny the centerpiece of his Westgroup network. He asked Bos to meet him at Jacob's office, knowing he was both Cameron's trusted advisor and that he liked the trappings of power. He sold Bos on the opportunity it would be for Mutiny, and on for him. The network and Mutiny would be expanding fast once it was bought, and it needed a steady sales hand at the wheel. Wouldn't Bos like to be back in the corner office where he belonged?

Bos was receptive to the offer, knowing it was a great offer that could do a lot for Cameron, and for him. But he was loyal to Cameron, and he went where she went. And no amount of flattery, or even a drop-in by Jacob Wheeler himself, was gonna change that. He would take Joe's message back to Cameron and tell her everything. But as much as she trusted his word, Bos wasn't the person to convince. Joe asked if it was Donna, and Bos replied:

What can I say? The kid's in love.

Joe would have to convince Tom Rendon. To do so, he tried a different line of attack. No C-Suite shock and awe, just an offer sheet delivered to Tom's home. Where his unemployed mom who had raised Tom and his brothers as a single mom would find it. Tom stormed into Joe's basement office to tell him off. Joe sat through it calmly and noted that Tom could have said all of this in a phone call. As much as Tom would insist otherwise, he left this encounter conflicted.

The Vote

The Mutiny programmers had gotten swept up in Cameron's rabble rousing against Joe and his purchase offer. But after the excitement died down, they got curious. Carl (Nick Pupo) pieced the scraps back together, and they looked at the details. They couldn't find the sale price, but they did see that Cameron owned 90% of the company. And that each of the founding programmers would get big raises, and 1% of the sale price. It would have been a big deal. But Cameron refused, so they didn't get anything.

As Tom returned from confronting Joe, Bodie (Joshua Hoover) and the other programmers minus Lev (who was not there) confronted Cameron. First, they asked about her owning 90% of the company. She told them to drop it. They pressured her to call for a vote over whether or not to accept the offer. She granted this demand, and called them out one by one:

Bodie: Sell
Arki (Gabriel Manak): Sell
Carl: Tried to Abstain, but voted Not Sell
Wonderboy (J. Elijah Cho): Not Sell
Bos: (After hesitating) Not Sell
Tom: He didn't say anything as Cameron looked at him for assurance he'd back her up. Seconds passed, feeling like hours.

The phone rang, and Bos answered it. Tom still didn't give his vote.

Bos interrupted the vote. Lev (August Emerson) was in the hospital.

Everyone at Mutiny convened at the hospital. Lev had been assaulted by several guys who had pretended to be "Mike", the guy he was talking to on Community. He'd live and recover, but it was bad. Whatever bad blood had popped up between Cameron and the team was on hold. One of their own had been hurt.

Late at night, when most of the team had gone home, Cameron sat with Tom in a waiting room. And she asked what his vote was. He tells her that his mom's cute story about giving him a cupcake and a Kayo every afternoon left out that this was his dinner. And that his mom got laid off but insisted she wear her bus driver uniform to meet Cameron. And he wrapped up:

This job means a lot to me. And I hope it goes on for a long, long time. But you also mean a lot to me. And I want us to go on for a long, long time. You gave me this job. It's your company.

Cameron listened to him, and decided that no, this wasn't her company. It was everyone's. She was gonna sell it to Joe.

Early the next morning, at the Westgroup headquarters, Joe learned Jacob's actual plans for Mutiny. There wasn't gonna be a focus on games, no big marketing push for Extract and Defend. As far as Jacob was concerned, games were dead. Why?

Nintendo.

Online gaming had found a foothold due to Atari falling apart in the early 80s. But the new console was a step above Atari's offerings, and it was gonna be big. Community was the beating heart of Mutiny, the one piece that would survive. And Jacob was intent on making that known to Mutiny. Joe pushed back, saying he promised Cameron and her team creative freedom. Jacob smirked and replied, sarcastically, "That was smart."

Joe went to find Cameron. The programmers told him she was still at the hospital with Lev. He was standing outside Lev's room, looking at him when Cameron walked by after getting herself a cup of coffee. Joe looked genuinely concerned about Lev, and started telling her a story about when he was in sixth grade. Bullies had written "fag" on his locker, and he had scrubbed it off. The next day, they had written it 20 times in permanent marker. He continued:

I never went back to my locker. Carried seven textbooks in my backpack for the rest of the year. I was only 11 years old, but I was already running from something. I guess it made my legs stronger, my back stronger. It's dangerous to try and really connect with someone. It's so special when you find a person you can be yourself with. You were that. Sara is. Don't sell. He'll ruin it. He won't mean to, but he will. He'll make a ton of money, the company will be a juggernaut, but your vision will be corrupted and lost. He'll start by pulling the plug on games.

Cameron, trying to keep up with Joe's rambling:

What--what is this, Joe? You fight so hard to get me to sign the dotted line--

Joe tried to make himself clear.

It's not my business. I'm not gonna bully you into this. It's your company. You should decide what happens to it. Maybe you'll make it. Maybe you won't. But you'll live or die by who you really are.

Cameron replied:

And where do you fit into all this?

Joe made his answer clear:

I don't. I'm removing myself from the equation.

Later that day, Cameron went back to Mutiny. She told everyone that it was her company, and she was not selling.

"Our first order. Clark computers. We're officially in business." - Gordon Clark, "Working for the Clampdown"

It took Gordon and his guys two days to build the prototype for Clark Computers. As their first computer whirred to life, they took it in and celebrated. As they drank their beers and thought about the computers they'd build in the future, Gordon gave them a speech:

You know...the hardest thing in life is to get knocked down and then get back up constantly. But we do it because we love it and we know deep down that if it's the right idea, it could be bigger than all of us. For a long time, I wondered if I was ever gonna find it. The closest I've come is my kids. Well...I think I've finally found something that will allow me to say to them with confidence, 'You can do it. You can follow your dreams. No matter how hard it is, you can do it.'

Gordon showed that Joe MacMillan wasn't the only guy from the Giant project who could give a great speech. And why not? Gordon was proud of the work he and his team did. After all, it was only a couple weeks earlier he had almost walked into Joe's office and told him they couldn't build a portable computer under 15 pounds. And yet, here they were, having built the Giant. Gordon had won.

Ed, Larry, and the other guys were confused. Why the hell was Gordon talking about Joe MacMillan? Gordon, for his part, was confused at why they were talking about Joe MacMillan. He suddenly came to, as if he awoke from a trance, and realized something weird had happened from the reactions of everyone around him. He gave them another compliment. In that garage you could hear the crickets' chirps.

Later on, Gordon sat on the bed. He stared straight ahead.

Donna walked in and asked what was wrong. He looked at her, a concerned look on his face. And then he told her Clark Computers had sold its first computer.

" What, are you mad?" - Cameron Howe, "Limbo"

Donna confronted Cameron after she had stated clearly the company was not for sale. She asked why Cameron changed her mind. Cameron told her because of Joe and asked, snottily, if she was mad. Donna replied:

Yeah, I am. I wanted to sell. And I'm not the only one, by the way. But you completely disregarded that based on some mysterious feeling you got off the person you told the rest of us never to trust.

But Cameron didn't budge, and Donna, angry, dropped it there. For better or worse Mutiny would be independent for the foreseeable future.

For Cameron, what was now important was shipping Extract and Defend. She and Tom wrapped up the work, and she had one final thing to do: put copy protection on the code. Tom disagreed with this, pointing out that if Mutiny had protected their code, they wouldn't have met. They disagreed on this, but for the moment disagreed playfully. They had just finished something great, and that was a big deal.

Outside of the Westgroup sale drama, things were going well for Mutiny. User numbers were growing, and finances were looking better. They were still reliant on the Westgroup network, but they could start to think about freedom. The growth came almost entirely from Community, with Games being a stagnant but stable user base.

With that good news in mind, Mutiny would welcome its users to the Mutiny house for a user picnic later that day. It was gonna be a good time for all.

"Maybe it is time to move on." - Jacob Wheeler, "Limbo"

Joe had scuttled the sale of Mutiny, because he knew it was the right thing for Cameron to do. It was time for him to move on. Sara (Aleksa Palladino) was his life now, if she'd have him. He left the hospital and went to Austin to ask Sara what she wanted.

She wanted to get married that day, and to be in California in two weeks. And that's what they did. After stopping at the courthouse to get married, they went to visit Jacob (James Cromwell) to let him know the good news. Though he was shocked, he congratulated them. And when Joe used the opportunity to give his two weeks' notice, Jacob was surprisingly accepting of it. He told Joe to take the keys to one of his classic cars, and have a great honeymoon, his treat. Joe also said he was sorry Mutiny passed; Jacob said he couldn't always get what he wanted.

A couple weeks later, Joe returned from his honeymoon, to pack up and make sure everything was good to go without him for the Westgroup network. Jacob introduced him to Jessie Evans (Skylar Astin), his replacement. He was almost everything people think Joe was. As such, Joe hated him.

He called Gordon to ask him to give Jessie the technical details of the network. Gordon didn't answer at first, saying only "Jules", but he got a hold of him the second time. Gordon showed up, too busy to actually show Jessie things directly, but he told Joe the details. Joe told him he got married and they were leaving for California. Gordon congratulated him and wished them well. They parted ways as something approaching friends.

Joe gave Jessie all of the details. He was cordial but dismissive, clearly humoring Joe because he was the boss' son-in-law. Joe couldn't let go of the network easily. But he was gonna have to go, nonetheless. California awaited.

"Do you have any respect for me?" - Tom Rendon, "Limbo"

As the party got started at Mutiny, Cameron hid in the house. Tom tried to get her to join the fun, reminding her they had talked about dressing up as "Soldier" and "Spy", characters from Extract and Defend. Tom had dressed up, Cameron thought it was a bad idea. So, Tom had to walk around meeting all of the users dressed up as a spy, complete with face paint.

A second time, he went to get her to make an appearance outside and realized she was adding the copy protection without telling him. This time they didn't get cute. Tom was angry. About the copy protection, and about whatever went down at the hospital. It wasn't clear to him whether or not Cameron respected his opinion. Cameron, assuming this was the end of their relationship, just asked him to break up with her if he was planning on it. This puzzled Tom, who said:

I'm not gonna break up with you. I'm just--I'm just mad at you, okay? And I can be mad at you, all right?

Cameron replied:

So, what, you wanna quit?

Tom, who continued to be exasperated with Cameron, said:

No, I don't want to quit. I love you. Why would I quit? Have you ever had a disagreement before? We're just talking. People talk. They fight. They argue. It happens every single day.

Cameron, softening her tone, focused on one small sentence in what Tom said:

You love me?

Before anything else could be resolved about this situation, Bos walked in with his son James (Ross Phillips) to introduce him to Cameron. And Tom, who was still in costume.

But later, Tom caught up with Cameron again, and they finished their conversation. The fight was over with, and Tom had said he loved Cameron. He tried to get her to say it back, but she wouldn't. She showed him affection and tried to hug and kiss him. But she couldn't utter those three little words. And yet, he was still there for her.

Clark Computers looked like it was gonna be a success. And then it all fell apart. They had an amazing number of sales, but they already had their first return as well. The ports had been installed wrong by Gordon. In addition, the company had lost all of the other guys besides Ed and Larry.

One morning, Stan (Randy Havens) showed up, back from Silicon Valley. He gave off an air of success, wearing the collar of his polo shirt popped, like a real mid-80s asshole. Gordon was skeptical of why he showed up now, with his collars and all of those Silicon Valley VC connections. He wanted to meet the gang for lunch at the usual place, but Gordon begged off. He had too much to do.

When the guys left for lunch, Gordon answered the phone. There was static. He just said "Jules?" He had hallucinated Jules in his and Donna's bedroom one night. She was clearly on his mind. But it didn't matter, the guys were back from lunch, and they had brought him a sandwich. And bad news. They were too scared of the risk of Clark Computers. Gordon was befuddled; after all, they had over 200 orders already. They continued to make vague protestations, apologizing, sure Gordon was right. It had to be Stan, right? That jerk, with all of that Silicon Valley money at his fingertips, stealing all of Gordon's guys. But for what?

While Donna was at the Mutiny picnic, one of the girls called home to talk to Gordon. He thumbed through a computer magazine as he talked, and son-of-a-bitch there was the ad. For "JKL Computers". With the same price point as Clark Computers! It had to be Stan. That asshole Stan. Gordon had to go get Donna's help to stop Stan.

Donna was no help. She told him to leave it for tomorrow, to enjoy the party. But he could not. He had to find the evidence, to know the truth about Stan's betrayal.

He broke into Stan's garage. And there, he found several computers. It was Stan! That mother-fuc--

Stan turned the lights on in the garage. Gordon was ranting about how Stan was back with his VC money to screw him over. Stan told him the truth: he had washed out in Silicon Valley and was back in Dallas. The computers were old junkers he was repairing to make ends meet. Ed and Larry had left Gordon's business because he was being weird, and because Donna had asked them to keep an eye on him. Right then, the cops came and took Gordon away.

In the back of the cop car, Gordon realized it wasn't Stan who was trying to bring him down. It was Donna. He didn't know why she wanted him to fail, but he was sure it was her.

"I just want this place to be about exploration" - Cameron Howe, "Limbo"

After being goaded to by Donna, Cameron finally said some words to the crowd at the picnic. She announced the release of Extract and Defend, to the applause of a few. She pushed it even more, asking how many used Mutiny for the games. Again, a handful. It was indisputable that most of the Mutiny user base were there for Community.

One of them was a young woman named Gretchen. She asked Cameron who she thought she was. She had come from a bad family situation, and had been lost. Until she found Mutiny. She told Cameron:

There are a bunch of people dealing with the same sort of stuff and they help me. They helped me realize that--that I could walk away. That there wasn't anything wrong with me. And I couldn't have done that without you.

Gretchen hugged Cameron.

Later that night, as things were dying down at the party, Cameron sat down on a couch next to Donna. She had to admit that Community was a great idea, and she was sorry she stood in Donna's way.

Donna thanked her. Cameron said that she wanted to be a part of it. Donna said she was. But Cameron clarified what she meant:

No, but I mean...so on the game side, we're always pushing the code, right? We're trying to get the most out of it. But what if we applied that same pressure to Community? I mean, the functionality of it could explode.

Cameron wanted to work with Donna to build the next generation of Community.

"You're a force of nature. All right?" - Sara Wheeler, "Limbo"

Sara had an idea: why didn't she and Joe take some MDMA that she had left over from a writing assignment, go clubbing, and say a final goodbye to Dallas? Joe thought that was a great idea.

At the club, they danced closely, and enjoyed the music and the lights, and the confetti cannons. Sara was dressed like Marilyn Monroe; Joe like Sonny Crockett. Being Joe MacMillan, the MDMA encouraged him to make a grand pronouncement. He saw the future:

I feel like there's a lot of goodness in me, a lot of greatness, but I can't get it out of me. I can't give it to the world. I have ideas. I'm not an echo. I make things in my mind, but I can't get them into the world. I can't get past this. [thumping his chest] It's like a trap. Like the world won't see the--me-- the real me.

Sara reassured him:

Oh no, I see you. You're a force of nature. You're gonna change the world.

Joe continued with his big drug-fueled speech, as Book of Love's "Boy" plays in the club:

I have ideas. Online could be more. It could be more than just inside bullshit for anointed coder shitheads. It could be universal. You could live your life there. It would change everything, I promise you. The world we live in now is going to look like the Stone Age. All these people with their things. The physical world is dead. A pathway is being built. A way out, into a world of pure information. A shared consciousness. The future is bearing down on us like a freight train, and nobody sees it.

A man and a woman show up, and they swap kisses with each other, with Sara, and with Joe. Sara asks Joe if he's ready to say goodbye to Dallas. The confetti cannon fires one last time, and he says he has one last stop.

Sara and Joe make love in the mainframe room at WestGroup. But they are interrupted by a group of people in the office area outside. Joe tells Sara to go back to the limo and wait for him. He checked what was happening. Jessie and a hand-picked team of techies were popping the cork to celebrate a fast turnaround on a project. On the monitor between them, Joe could see something: A Network portal called WestNet that looked an awful lot like Mutiny.

Whatever it was, it had just gone live.

"There is no more Mutiny. It's gone." - Cameron Howe, "Limbo"

Across town, Donna and Cameron continued their work on the new Mutiny. The ideas were coming fast, and they needed to get them down. They asked Carl to get a whiteboard so they could write the ideas down and really get started building it out.

Carl didn't answer. Something was on his computer screen, and whatever it was he didn't know what it was.

There, where Mutiny had been even minutes earlier, was now something called WestNet.

It looked an awful lot like Mutiny. But it was not Mutiny. And it was happening on everybody's computers. People were logging in to the Community on WestNet and finding their friends from Mutiny. At best people were confused about what had happened. At worst they just assumed this was Community now. The team tried calling users to make sure they knew this wasn't Mutiny, but it was hard to convince them. An atmosphere of dread filled the room. This was worse than Sonaris, even worse than when Joe pulled the plug on the network during negotiations a while back. Mutiny faced extinction, and Cameron started to panic:

No, no, this isn't happening! [throws beer bottle at a stack of Atari cartridges]

If it wasn't bad enough for Cameron, Donna, and the rest of Mutiny, Joe walks in. He was there to warn Mutiny of what he saw, but he was too late. Nobody at the company knew Joe had quit and had been away on his honeymoon. All they saw was the guy from Westgroup, and Westgroup had just stolen the network.

Joe had the truth on his side. Or at least enough of it to count. He hadn't done this to them. He wasn't completely innocent. After all, WestNet wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for him. But he didn't do this to them.

Now would have been the time for Joe to dig deep, push through the fog of the MDMA, and find the right words to Mutiny. To offer them comfort, and a way forward to stand up against this calamity. But all he could do was fumble and mumble semi-coherently.

He pleaded that he didn't do this, wouldn't do this. He wasn't slick, wasn't smooth, and couldn't find the right words. A more forgiving audience might have seen his lack of eloquence as a clear sign he wasn't lying. That his rambling about a guy named Jessie was an attempt by Joe to be honest, to say what was true and not just what would save him. But Mutiny was all out of grace for him. Cameron just looked at him, and so did everyone else. Bos told him to leave, now. Joe left.

Cameron sat down in front of the XTs, and Donna joined her. They both agreed they didn't believe Joe. And Donna asked Cameron what they were gonna do.

Cameron just sat on the floor and stared.
